This Solar House
In August, the UB Buzz featured a post about an innovative environmental measure at Unity College (Maine): the construction of a presidential house to be powered by the sun and expected to use only the energy it generates.
Wonder what daily life would be like in this prototype home, made of timber frames with adjustable walls? Unity President Mitchell Thomashow, and his wife, Cindy, executive director of the college's Center for Environmental Education, have begun blogging about their experience on Living Green in Unity House.
In collaboration with University Business, the Thomashows will write about their insights and encounters in their residence. Sections of their posts will be featured in a future University Business magazine article.
Thomashow, president of Unity College, has gotten used to this almost daily habit, which is just one of several routines that have become part of living in the solar powered Unity House. When he arrives inside, the temperature is 65 degrees. Thomashow takes out a log book and writes in the days electricity use; he is been keeping tabs on the house energy use for most of the last four months since he and his wife, Cindy, moved in to the college's new house for the president.
