Four-Day Work Week

Fridays are becoming optional at IHEs, in terms of work weeks. A number of institutions are looking into or going ahead with switching to a four-day work week to help their employees cut down on fuel costs.

Misericordia University (Pa.) has begun a one-month program that lets employees choose which day of the week they want to take off. In return, employees will work longer days during that period to fulfill the 32-hour work week requirement. The program will run through August 1.

Eastern Kentucky University and LeTourneau University (Texas) have created policies for the summer.

Oakland University (Mich.) just started offering its hourly employees the option of a four-day work week, a plan that follows a similar move made by Oakland County officials. The program is not mandatory; departments can choose to opt out if they wish.
